lockdown restrictions, which saw the closure of all non-essential businesses, including hair and beauty salons. The strict nationwide lockdown, announced by the Prime Minister during a press conference at Downing Street on October 31, is expected to last until early December and replaces the current regional three tier restriction system which has been in place since October 14.
In a statement to the Commons, Boris Johnson said there was "no alternative" to the latest nationwide lockdown. Once the second national lockdown eases on December 2, the country will then adopt an exit strategy, and will continue to follow the restrictions from the existing three tier system, depending on the severity of infection rates in local areas.
