Unvaccinated pregnant women make up nearly one fifth of the most critically ill Covid-19 patients in recent months, new data has revealed.

Over the last three months, 17 per cent of the Covid patients receiving treatment through a special lung-bypass machine in England were mothers-to-be who had not had their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, according to NHS England.

Data also shows that pregnant women accounted for around a third of all women aged between 16 and 49 in intensive care on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
