Thousands headed for beach today as the hottest day of the year sent the mercury to a sizzling 35C scorcher. Sun-seekers were pictured piling onto beaches, including Bournemouth and Brighton, to make the most of the mini heatwave.
Parts of the UK are expected to be hotter than Ibiza as the 500 mile-wide "Spanish Plume" brings continental heat. But Public Health England’s Heatwave Plan warned there could be travel disruption for Brits heading for the coast.
And there is the possibility of thunderstorms later in the evening. The health body's weather advice says: “At 33C, Tarmac roads may begin to melt.” Roasting temperatures are predicted in much of England, with the hottest temperatures of 35C predicted in London and the South East.
