A four-day yellow weather warning for thunderstorms is in place but temperatures could still reach a scorching 37C. Many in the UK basked in fine and dry weather with temperatures in the mid-30s over the weekend - but torrential rain is now being forecast.
A 80mm deluge - equating to a month's rain in a few hours - could cause hazardous flash flooding, according to the Met Office.
The national forecaster says: "Some places are likely to see severe thunderstorms through Monday afternoon and evening - but there is uncertainty in location and timing." The heat is set to be maintained, however, but the humidity and change in pressure is ushering in stormy weather as August moves towards its mid point.
