Storm Francis is set to batter the UK on Tuesday, bringing 70mph winds and up to three-and-a-half inches of rain. The arrival of the second "unseasonable" storm in less than a week was heralded by heavy rainfall hitting the south-west coast of England overnight.

It comes after similar rough weather hit the UK last week with tragic consequences. Storm Ellen caused 15-year-old Nicola Williams to be swept to her death in the Rhymney River in Llanrumney, Cardiff, while a 50-year-old holidaymaker died in the sea near Helston in west Cornwall.
