Weather warnings for heavy rain are in force across the country while the Environment Agency warned of a "volatile situation" with downpours combining with melting snow.
The wet conditions are expected to bring significant flooding, high winds and snowfall until Thursday. The Met Office's amber weather warning, which suggests the possibility of travel disruption and the potential risk to life and property, has been in place across much of the Midlands and northern England since Tuesday morning.
