The UK government issued advice for those travelling to South Korea following the declaration of martial law, which was lifted a few hours later.

On Tuesday night, South Korea's president, Yoon Suk Yeol, plunged his country into crisis by declaring martial law. The decision sparked a furious response - including from members of his own political party - as citizens in the Asian democracy took to the streets to protest.

The president had cited "anti-state" forces and opposition in the country’s parliament, which he accused of sympathising with communist North Korea for his decision to impose martial law.

However, less than three hours later, parliament voted to lift the declaration. National Assembly Speaker Woo Won Shik declared that the martial law was “invalid” and that lawmakers "will protect democracy with the people."
