Heavy snow has caused major disruption on the railways today. Two of the North West's main train companies have issued 'do not travel' warnings as the snow wreaks havoc across the rail network.

Northern is currently advising all passengers not to travel. In a statement it said: "Due to significant snowfall causing problems on the rail network we advise all passengers not to travel.

This position will be reviewed throughout the day and updates will be posted if the situation changes. "We recommend checking your journey for live service updates before travelling, due to short notice amendments." Meanwhile TransPennine Express is also warning passengers not to travel on certain key routes across the north today.

It says that's because heavy snow means replacement bus services can't run on routes where engineering work is taking place.
