Tony was born in Middlesex, England in 1941, but mostly worked in America. He began writing and performing while a student at Cambridge University.

He was a member of the Footlights revue in 1962 alongside John Cleese, Graham Chapman and Tim Brooke-Taylor. Tony made his move to the USA with comedy partner Nick Ullett in 1964.
