There’s a charming weirdness at the core of An American Pickle, the latest Seth Rogen star vehicle. It’s a movie that sounds like it could be either amazing or terrible, depending on the execution. Luckily, Rogen and company give it a steady hand, as well as a singular identity, making the comedy a really enjoyable one. By leaning into the premise and its various possibilities, as opposed to getting bogged down in one specific aspect and solely going for laughs there, it’s a fuller meal, if you’ll pardon the expression. As the first HBO Max cinematic (or, you know, streaming) release, it’s a good get for the company. Out now, it’s quite entertaining.

Seth Rogen spent 10 months growing out his beard just to shoot one additional scene for his new movie An American Pickle.The Pineapple Express star takes on double duty in the film, which is based on 2013 New Yorker novella Sell Out, about 1920s factory worker Herschel Greenbaum, who falls into a vat of pickles and is brined for 100 years, only to emerge in his great-grandson’s modern-day New York without having aged a day.Rogen grew out his facial hair to play Herschel first and then went clean-shaven to portray the great-grandson, Ben.“We shot the movie as Herschel and then I shaved,” he explained in a digital premiere for An American Pickle.

Based on an utterly ridiculous premise—a man who is preserved in pickle juice for 100 years and comes out of his hibernation unscathed in modern-day Brooklyn—it’s kind of unbelievable that Seth Rogen’s “An American Pickle” is a film at all, and a movie that someone actually greenlit. Originally a Sony movie, eventually sold to HBO Max in the COVID-19 pandemic, at first— in its Eastern-European-set prologue and first act, especially— it’s hard to imagine the quaint, peculiar, small stakes ‘American Pickle’ as a theatrical release, and anything more than the TV movie that it is now.

Call Me by Your Name director Luca Guadagnino will direct an untitled Scotty Bowers project written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.The feature is based on the 2017 documentary Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood, a look into the late Hollywood legend Bowers, whose memoir documented his times spent as a sexual procurer to the stars over a number of decades.Bowers, a World War II veteran, fought at the Battle of Iwo Jima, and later became a well-known bisexual male hustler and all-purpose date-arranger for Hollywood movie stars from the 1940s until the 1980s.Bowers’ memoir Full Service was published in 2012. He died last year at the age of 96.
