A raft of new measures, including a helpline for the most in need of support, have been set out for those considered to be extremely vulnerable.
From Monday (March 23), up to 1.5 million people identified by the NHS as being at higher risk of severe illness if they contract coronavirus will be urged to stay at home to protect themselves.
Those identified as belonging to one or more of the at-risk groups will be contacted by their GP practice or specialist who will strongly advise them to stay at home for a period of at least 12 weeks.
Those who have been identified as part of this group will receive a letter from Tuesday, which will be followed up by both text and email if this has been provided to the GP.
