Earlier this week I wrote about how proud I was of Marks & Spencer for becoming the first large high street store on earth to publicly stop using Xinjiang cotton.
Soon after it was joined by ASOS, Whistles, Reformation and Gap and (a still depressingly small) number of foreign companies.
Under pressure from buyers and governments, Nike and H&M didn’t go so far as to openly remove all Xinjiang cotton from their supply chains, but they have spoken out against the treatment of the Uighurs and the ubiquity of cotton from the region in global fashion.Eight months ago, H&M said that it was ending its relationship with a specific Chinese supplier accused of using forced labour, and at around the same time Nike uploaded a statement to its website.
