Princess of Wales and Princess Charlotte. Of course, this is to be expected; they are mother and daughter after all. Kate shares a strong resemblance to her own mother, Carole, too.

But on a sombre day for the nation, it was heartening to see Charlotte taking part in such a meaningful farewell to her beloved Gan-Gan - the other family member to whom she’s been most likened. At just seven years old, Charlotte was the youngest person attending the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, but she conducted herself with a maturity that was beyond her years, gazing with curiosity at the gathered crowds along the procession route, and discreetly whispering to her mother during the service.Clothes were an important means of communication for the late Queen (her use of colour and brooches often paid tribute to people or occasions), and today we saw how she has shared the tenets of this language with her children, her grandchildren and their partners.

This is and has always been more complex for the women of the family than the men.Take Charlotte’s outfit: it was similar enough to Kate’s to create a sense of unity, but not too matchy-matchy, which would have come across as a bit twee.

A Jane Taylor boater hat echoed Kate’s saucer-shaped Philip Treacy millinery, and a black wool coat, by Spanish childrenswear brand Ancar, was similar in cut to Kate’s Alexander McQueen coat-dress.Like the rest of the congregation, it reflected formal royal mourning dress codes (covered heads, knee-length hems, black stockinged legs) but it was also appropriate for her age.
