Deaf representation has taken a major step forward with two Oscar-nominated films this year — one a fictional story, the other entirely real.

ESPN confirmed Wednesday that it has signed longtime Fox broadcasters Joe Buck and Troy Aikman to multi-year deals, securing their roles as the new voices of the network’s Monday Night Football. The deal takes effect with the upcoming season, which will mark the pair’s 21st season in the booth together — the first 20 years at Fox.

Screen Actors Guild Awards kicked off Sunday against a backdrop of geopolitical conflict and a pandemic that has upended the way that movies and television shows are produced and distributed. “Ted Lasso” star and creator Jason Sudekis won his second consecutive SAG Award for best actor in a TV comedy for his work as an optimistic soccer coach in the hit Apple TV show, and Jean Smart earned her first SAG for best actress in a TV comedy after four previous nominations for her role as a caustic standup in “Hacks.” “Actors, nobody gets us,” Smart exclaimed.

CODA‘s Troy Kotsur made history at Sunday’s SAG Awards, becoming the first deaf actor in the history of the award show to claim an individual prize. He prevailed in the category of Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role, besting the likes of Ben Affleck (Amazon Studios’ The Tender Bar), Bradley Cooper (MGM/UAR’s Licorice Pizza), Jared Leto (MGM/UAR’s House of Gucci) and Kodi Smit-McPhee (Netflix’s The Power of the Dog).
