The rather inevitable news comes roughly one month after director Matt Shakman exited the “Star Trek” film, which was nominally set to be the fourth cinematic tour of duty for Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, Karl Urban as Bones, John Cho as Sulu and Simon Pegg as Scotty. Shakman was successfully courted by Marvel Studios to helm its “Fantastic Four” reboot, reuniting the “WandaVision” director with the studio, after “Spider-Man: No Way Home” director Jon Watts left that film in April.

In anticipation of the sequel “The Way of Water,” which opens in December, Disney re-released James Cameron’s original science-fiction epic to promising returns. The film generated $10 million in North America and $20.5 million internationally over the weekend, a huge result for movie that opened more than a decade ago, even if that movie happens to be the highest-grossing global release in history. With this weekend’s returns, “Avatar” widens its lead as the biggest movie of all time with $2.85 billion worldwide.

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Never doubt dinosaurs. “Jurassic World Dominion,” the latest installment in Universal’s Tyrannosaurus-sized film franchise, has finally crossed $1 billion globally. It took more than four months to get there, making “Dominion” one of the slowest films to gross $1 billion in its original run. Other blockbusters that reached $1 billion after three months, or longer, of playing on the big screen include “Finding Dory,” “Zootopia” and “Frozen.” That’s relatively quick compared to “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” which needed at least two decades and a few re-releases to join the club. But hey, a win is a win. To date, “Jurassic World Dominion” has collected $376 million at the domestic box office and $624 million internationally. Only three movies — including “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Top Gun: Maverick” — hit the billion-dollar mark in pandemic times. Unlike those films, “Dominion” had the advantage of playing in China, where it brought in $157 million.

It’s a fourth big week at Number 1 for Top Gun: Maverick on the Official Film Chart as it continues to fly ahead on digital downloads only.

Elsa Keslassy International Correspondent Canal+, France’s leading pay TV group, has signed distribution deals with Universal and Sony to ramp up its programming of U.S. movies. Under the pact, Canal+ now has access to the studios’ new films six months after their releases. Sony’s “Spiderman : No Way Home” is currently being broadcast on Canal+’s linear pay TV channels, along with its transactional VOD platform, My Canal. The news was half-revealed by Maxime Saada, Canal+ Group’s chair and CEO, during the company’s upbeat press conference on Sept. 14, which was held at their posh headquarters in Paris. Saada, who recently joined the management board of Vivendi, Canal Plus Group’s parent company, said the outfit already boasts partnerships with Fox, Disney and Warner, as well as Paramount.

Refresh for latest…: There was a little more excitement at the international box office this weekend, with two local movies leading the charge and a handful of new milestones for Hollywood pics.

The trailer was introduced by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige on Saturday at the D23 Expo.The “Echo” footage, which was exclusive to those in the room at D23, included subtitles, shots of Native people and tons of Echo (Cox) kicking ass. At the very end of the first-look video, Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin returns and is wearing an eyepatch. The show is a spinoff of last year’s Marvel series “Hawkeye,” which featured Cox as Echo, aka Maya Lopez, in a supporting role. Created by David Mack and Joe Quesada in 1999 as a supporting character for the superhero Daredevil, Maya Lopez is a deaf Cheyenne woman with expert athletic skills and the ability to perfectly copy people’s movement. In “Hawkeye,” the character was depicted as a leader in the Tracksuit Mafia, a gang of criminals working under Kingpin. The show sees Lopez leave New York for her hometown, where she reconnects with her roots and ends up at the center of a new crisis.

Ethan Shanfeld As “Top Gun: Maverick” continues to dominate the box office more than three months after its release, Jon Hamm, who stars in the movie as Vice Admiral Beau “Cyclone” Simpson, is still celebrating its success. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Hamm noted that the Tom Cruise-led sequel is the only film to top the box office on both Memorial Day (when it premiered) and Labor Day. “That’s unprecedented in many ways,” Hamm said. “It’s one of the only top five [films] that doesn’t have somebody in a cape or on a spaceship. It’s a story about real people, it’s got a lot of emotional resonance, people are really responding to it.”

Better Call Saul alum Michael Mando is set to star opposite Brian Tyree Henry in Apple TV+’s crime drama series Sinking Spring, from Top Gun: Maverick writer Peter Craig. The series is directed and executive produced by Ridley Scott via his Scott Free Productions.

Top Gun: Maverick claims a second week at Number 1 on the Official Film Chart, surpassing the 500,000 sales mark in just 11 days.

Naman Ramachandran In its 15th weekend of release, Paramount’s “Top Gun: Maverick” is still flying high at the U.K. and Ireland box office. The Tom Cruise vehicle collected £600,258 ($692,670) in third place at the box office, according to numbers released by Comscore. With a total of £81.6 million ($94.1 million) it has overtaken “Titanic” (£80.3 million) to occupy the No. 9 position on the all time box office chart in the territory. Sony’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” swung back into cinemas with an extended cut and collected £469,309 in fifth position in its 38th weekend in the territory. With a total of £96.9 million, it has swung past James Bond film “No Time to Die” (£96.7 million) and is now No. 3 among the territory’s all time box office champions. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (£123.2 million) and another Bond title “Skyfall” (£103.2 million) are the top two.

James Bond franchise's 60 years, they actually killed off 007. Nevertheless, at the end of the credits, the immortal words "James Bond will return" came up, but this is confusing for some fans. If Bond is dead, how can there be a new Bond? Consider for a moment how Daniel Craig's 007 only just earned his licence to kill at the start of Casino Royale.

Without any major releases on the calendar, Sony’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” — yes, a movie that debuted in December of 2021 — managed to return to the No. 1 spot in North America. Sony re-released the film with 11 minutes of extra footage that proved to be tantalizing to comic book fans, bringing in $6 million from 3,935 theaters over the weekend. “No Way Home” is expected to finish the Labor Day holiday weekend on Monday with $7.6 million. Another holdover, Paramount’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” is trailing ever-so-slightly with $5.5 million between Friday and Sunday and an estimated $7 million through Monday. Since ticket sales are close, the final order could change on Monday. In any case, the triumph of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Top Gun: Maverick” highlights the bleakness at the box office considering both of those films are widely available on home entertainment.

Thanks to heavily discounted tickets, an estimated 8.1 million moviegoers attended their local multiplex to purchase tickets for just $3, making Sept. 3 the highest-attended day of the year for theaters, according to the National Association of Theater Owners. In an effort to populate multiplexes during the dog days of summer, more than 3,000 theaters across the country, including major chains like AMC and Regal, were charging just $3 for admission to any movie in any format — far less expensive than the country’s average ticket price.
