She might be having the best time competing on this year's Strictly Come Dancing, but Nicola Adams has opened up about the terrifying time her mum contracted meningitis.

Nicola's mum woke up not feeling too good, but her family thought she had the flu and didn't think much of it, with the Strictly star who was 14 at the time, and her younger brother Kurtis heading to school.

However, when the pair returned and Dee was still in bed, Nicola instinctively realised something wasn't quite right and called an ambulance.The family later found out Dee had contracted meningitis and Nicola's quick thinking ultimately saved her mum's life.
