A major report has revealed a staggering 63% of the 9.4 million people placed on furlough kept working during April and May.Chancellor Rishi Sunak launched a £30 billion furlough scheme in March which promised to pay 80% of the wages of workers placed on furlough because of the pandemic (up to £2,500 per month).It was hoped the scheme would encourage UK businesses to retain staff on furlough, a temporary lay-off, rather than letting them go.Businesses were forbidden to claim Government money for staff who continued to work during this time.But a shocking new study from Oxford, Cambridge and Zurich universities shows a huge number of employers were abusing the furlough system.
