The residential Abbco building in the Al Nahda area, which has 48 floors, is engulfed in flames. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
Surrounding buildings are also thought to be at risk of catching fire. Video from the scene shows the devastating blaze engulfing the building, with people shouting to avoid the flying debris.
The city is 17 miles north of Dubai. Sharjah Civil Defence teams told Gulf News that residents had been evacuated. The fire broke out shortly after 9pm local time.
