It comes after the US indicated it is to give A-10 Thunderbolt ground attack aircraft to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s men. READ MORE: Putin used 'body double' during meeting with Turkey president, Ukraine claims A senior source said: “The aim is to make sure that when Ukrainian forces call in an A-10 they deliver a grid-perfect reference.”They added: “There is an art in delivering exact grid references and getting directional awareness right every time, and that is what we need to make sure the Ukrainians walk away with.”Officially called Joint Terminal Air Controllers, the teams from across Ukrainian forces will carry out a two-week training stint with the SAS in eastern Europe.They will be shown how to pinpoint Russian targets and give pilots time to manoeuvre into position while evading enemy fire at 450mph.Known as the “Warthog”, the A-10 is flown low and slow to hit the enemy.
It has a 30mm hydraulic-driven Gatling gun in its nose capable of firing 4,000 rounds a minute, as well as a payload of lethal Maverick air-to- surface missiles.In Afghanistan, American pilots flying AC-130 gunships preferred having UK forces to act as their forward air controllers.The British troops gave them expert guidance to ensure civilians were not accidentally hit.
Meanwhile, outgoing PM Boris Johnson this week visited Ukrainian troops as they were being trained in the UK. Bozo hurled a grenade and handled an anti-tank missile launcher during his trip to the British Army base in North Yorkshire.
