The controversial Eat Out to Help Out scheme could return after the current lockdown, Rishi Sunak has hinted. The Tory Chancellor refused to rule out bringing back the restaurant discount, and said he will want people to get “out and about” when the time comes.
It comes despite a row over the scheme’s effectiveness and fears it may have helped accelerate the second wave of Covid-19. A study from the University of Warwick last month suggested 8% to 17% of newly-detected infection clusters could be attributed to the scheme.
It added areas with a higher rate of uptake experienced a sharp rise in the emergence of new clusters a week after the scheme began.
