Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand believes Cristiano Ronaldo needs more help from his team-mates and the club as a whole as they have “not played their role”.Real Madrid legend Ronaldo returned to the club amid a backdrop of huge excitement and hope that United could even challenge for the Premier League.

Unfortunately the season has not even yielded a place in next season's Champions League, as United’s 1-0 away loss to Crystal Palace consigned them to a miserable sixth placed finish.Nevertheless, Ronaldo did enjoy an impressive return to the Premier League, contributing 18 league goals and three assists in 30 appearances.

And Ferdinand has laid down the gauntlet for his United team mates to chip in and help the Portuguese ace when Erik ten Hag begins his reign as United boss.“On a personal level he has done what Ronaldo does - scores goals and win games,” Ferdinand said to JOE. “Without Ronaldo they do not get to the knockout phases of the Champions League, he’s scored winning goals multiple times and he’s lived up to his side of the bargain.“I think the club has not played their role in terms of giving him the platform for success.

It just shows you great players, including the best players in the conversation for the best players ever, you cannot do it alone.“You need team-mates to help and this shows that,” he added.
