Lee Mason has been told he should be quit as a professional referee following his performance in Manchester City's FA Cup victory over Newcastle.

Mason failed to spot Fabian Schar shove Gabriel Jesus in the penalty area in real time, before VAR overruled and recommended he pointed to the spot.

Portsmouth born Mason has been a Premier League referee since 2006, having previously been a linesman in the top flight and the Football League from 1998 until 2002.
