Due to his abdication, the incredibly rare coin never made it into the hands of the public when it was created 85 years ago.The £5 sold for an eye-watering £1.65million and it has become the most sought after coin in British history.After Edward was abdicated in December 1936, the Royal Mint suspended production when it was due to begin in January 1937.
The future king had quit the thrown to marry Wallis Simpson – meaning only three prototypes were ever produced. It was a controversial coin as he chose to show his face in profile the left, when it should be on the right.
