Taxpayers have forked out a “gobsmacking” £40m over the Crown Office’s botched prosecutions relating to Rangers.The massive sum was buried in Scottish Government accounts published this week.Scottish Labour MSP Pauline McNeill said: “This case has been a disaster for the Scottish Government, from the spiralling costs to the damage done to public trust in our justice system. “We need a full, independent public inquiry to get to the bottom of what went so badly wrong here, so we can ensure these catastrophic mistakes are never made again.”Finance experts David Whitehouse and Paul Clark, who used to be the Ibrox club’s administrators, were wrongly arrested in 2014.
