Sean Baker is a fearless filmmaker. It’s hard to disagree with that statement when you consider the risks he’s taken over the course of his career, especially with his most recent features.

It’s safe to say that director Sean Baker‘s latest film, “Red Rocket,” is one of the most anticipated of this year’s Cannes Film Festival. “The Florida Project,” Baker’s last film, premiered during the Director’s Fortnight at Cannes 2017 and quickly became one of the most talked-about films at the festival.

After rolling winners with his last two indie outings, Tangerine and The Florida Project, director Sean Baker makes it a trifecta with Red Rocket, a wild ride about a big-time male porn star who returns penniless from LA to his native Texas to figure out and regain his groove. Like Baker’s previous films, this one deals with a very specific sub-culture that is used to the max to inform the often wayward characters. A highlight of the Cannes Film Festival 2021 competition, this wayward and raunchy outing will, like Baker’s previous work, attract a following with a taste for something fresh and different.

Sean Baker must have a thing for donut shops, the distinctly American small businesses have now been a centerpiece of two of his more celebrated films. The now-defunct Hollywood landmark Donut Time was the setting for significant drama in 2015’s “Tangerine” and now a similar establishment in the greater Galveston, Texas area is a fixture for his latest endeavor, “Red Rocket.” Beyond the welcome to return of such establishments, the real surprise is this Cannes Film Festival selection may be Baker’s most political film to date.

After not having a Cannes Film Festival in 2020, obviously due to the pandemic, it appears the French event is making up for lost time with an absolutely stacked lineup of features in 2021. And thankfully, for film fans that aren’t able to make the trip to France right now, the festival has released a bunch of first-look photos for some of our most anticipated features of the festival.

The 74th Cannes Film Festival has a slate of films. It has a starting date, July 6, an end date, July 17th, and its 2020 jury President Spike Lee is vaxed and ready for la Croisette.

The Cannes Film Festival is around the corner, which means companies like The Match Factory are dropping trailers for their new films. The latest is “Prayers For The Stolen” (aka “Noche de Fuego“) by Mexican director Tatiana Huezo (‘Tempestad“), which will make its world premiere at Cannes in the Un Certain Regard section next month.

Last week, it was announced that “Petrov’s Flu,” the new Russian language film by Kirill Serebrennikov, will bow in competition at the Cannes Film Festival this summer for the pic’s world premiere. In addition, they’ve released an enticing trailer (see below) with English subtitles that echo the comedic tone and showcases Serebrennikov’s strong visual style.
