Jem Aswad Senior Music EditorPearl Jam paid tribute to the late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins on the opening night of their “Gigaton” tour in singer Eddie Vedder’s hometown of San Diego on Tuesday night.Before performing “Quick Escape” at the city’s Viejas Arena Vedder paid homage to drummer Matt Cameron’s friendship with Hawkins, who died in Columbia while the Foos were on tour, and added a personal touch as well.“[Hawkins] emitted something very incredible and very special,” Vedder said to the audience, before turning to Cameron and saying, “We’re all missing him, and so, Matt, I’m sorry again for your loss. But it just gives us another chance to say how much we appreciate you as well.” Cameron and Hawkins formed a side ban called the Nighttime Boogie Association in 2020 after both took part in a tribute concert for the late Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell in 2019.On Sunday night, the  Red Hot Chili Peppers honored Hawkins as well, at Jazz Fest in New Orleans on Sunday while frontman Dave Grohl, Hawkins’ widow Alison, and other members of the Foo Fighters looked on from the wings.

Pearl Jam‘s Eddie Vedder has teamed up with NASA to interview the crew aboard the International Space Station.The ISS is currently orbiting more than 250 miles above Earth, and onboard are NASA astronauts Kayla Barron, Raja Chari, Thomas Marshburn, and Mark Vande Hei, as well as ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Matthias Maurer.Speaking to Vedder yesterday (April 22) in celebration of Earth Day, they shared their thoughts on having a front-row seat to the global effects of climate change; reflected on the stewardship of Earth; and space’s ability to unite everyone.The interview is the second time the frontman has collaborated with NASA. Last month, Vedder released his ‘Invincible’ music video inspired by NASA’s Artemis I Moon mission. Members of the iconic grunge bands Nirvana, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam have congregated to form a new group called 3rd Secret, and released their self-titled first album Monday.The musical ensemble includes ex Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic; Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil; and drummer Matt Cameron, who played for both Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.The group also features members Bubba Dupree, a guitarist who was in the punk band Void; singer Jillian Raye, who was in Novoselic's band Giants in the Trees; and singer Jennifer Johnson. Stevie Nicks, Jack White and Pink have been announced to headline Eddie Vedder’s Ohana Festival in California this autumn.Vedder, who will also play a solo headline set, topped the bill on all three nights of last year’s event after it returned following a one-year hiatus due to the COVID pandemic.The festival at Dana Point will also feature Broken Social Scene performing ‘You Forgot It In People’, and other sets by St. Vincent, Khruangbin, Brittany Howard, Manchester Orchestra, Kevin Morby, Gang Of Youths, Bomba Estereo, Noga Erez, Billy Strings and many others.Ohana Festival, which launched in 2016, runs from August 30-September 2, 2022. Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic, Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil and Pearl Jam/Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron – have formed a new supergroup called 3rd Secret, and, without having announced it beforehand, dropped their debut album yesterday (April 11).A self-titled affair, the 11-track effort sports a broad tonal palette – it leans heavily on classic grunge and alt-rock flavours, but adds diversity with hints of laidback folk and indie-rock, swampy blues and stomping hard-rock. Tracks like ‘Dead Sea’ and ‘Winter Solstice’ make impressive use of twangy, melancholy acoustics, while the use of an accordion on ‘Right Stuff’ adds a unique sense of theatricality. ‘Diamond In The Cold’, on the other hand, is a crunchy, mosh-primed rock anthem, with songs like ‘I Choose Me’ and ‘Lies Fade Away’ embracing the epochal ‘90s grunge sound that 3rd Secret’s members built their legacies on.Have a listen to the full album below:Alongside Novoselic, Thayil and Cameron, 3rd Secret is rounded out by guitarist Jon ‘Bubba’ Dupree (best known for his work in ‘80s hardcore outfit Void, as well as the alt-metal supergroup Hater, which also featured Cameron) and singers Jillian Raye (who Novoselic also plays with as part of Giants In The Trees) and Jennifer Johnson. Recording for the album was split between three sessions, all of which featured involvement from longtime Nirvana and Soundgarden collaborator Jack Endino.

We’re on our way. We’re making music,” he told Consequence Of Sound.He also confirmed that producer, guitarist and songwriter Andrew Watt, who has a history with Justin Bieber and recently worked on frontman Eddie Vedder‘s album ‘Earthling’, is on board.“We’re psyched,” Gossard said.
