Martha Luttrell, a veteran talent agent whose clients ranged from Susan Sarandon and Martin Campbell to Julie Taymor, Sam Shepard and Waylon Jennings and also worked with Mike Nichols and Bill Robinson, died Sunday of pancreatic cancer in Calabasas, CA. She was 80.

Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief Veteran film, theater and opera director Julie Taymor has been set as the president of the competition jury at next month’s Tokyo International Film Festival. Taymor (“The Lion King”) will head a small group that selects the winners from the 15 competition titles that unspool in Tokyo between Oct. 24 and Nov. 2, 2022. The other four members of the jury will be announced later. Taymor is the second woman to head the jury in as many years and follows Isabelle Huppert in 2021. There was no competition in 2020 due to COVID. And in 2019, the jury was headed by China’s Zhang Ziyi.

When Gloria Steinem finally came to the set of The Glorias, the Amazon movie chronicling her life and directed by Julie Taymor, hair and makeup artist Judy Chin wasn't sure she'd have the guts to meet her. Chin, along with Miia Kovero and Adrien Morot, had never met the feminist icon but had been studying her face for months.

Gloria Steinem is a towering figure in the women’s rights movement. Just in terms of activists, overall, she’d be up there. So, a biopic of her life is hardly a surprise. Hell, even a stylized one makes sense, considering her stylish nature, as well as the time she came about. However, it’s hard not to have the feeling after seeing The Glorias that filmmaker Julie Taymor was the wrong choice to helm the flick. This film, despite passionate performances, falls very flat. In making this so highly stylized and employing more than one actress to play Steinem, a lot of the effectiveness that would otherwise be here is lost. Simply put, this is a disappointment.
