Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic “Melissa Etheridge: I’m Not Broken,” a docuseries focusing on bonds the singer forms with incarcerated women over addiction issues that have affected their lives, will hit Paramount+ later this year, the network announced Thursday. The two-part series will follow Etheridge as she writes a new song inspired by her communication with five women locked up at a prison in her Kansas hometown, the Topeka Correctional Facility.

Showtime documentary, “Sheryl,” she chronicles the highs and lows of becoming one of the world’s top-selling female musicians. And although Crow never spectacularly crashed to rock bottom like some rockers have, she illuminates how tenuous mental health can become in the harsh light of fame, and what it was like to be an ambitious woman in music in the decades before the MeToo movement.

Given its roots as a music festival, it is no surprise that the SXSW film festival continues to be at the forefront of music documentaries. Even in 2021 – when the festival took place entirely online – SXSW was home to the world premieres of high-profile music documentaries on Demi Lovato and Tom Petty.
