More than 450,000 potential soldiers have given up on their applications during the last six years. Many have been frustrated by long delays in the recruitment process run by private firm Capita.
Some say it lost or ignored their applications – and one branded the system an “utter shambles”. Figures released in a Freedom of Information request show that 78,000 hopefuls have backed out every year on average since 2013.
The previous year Capita won a 10-year £1.3billion contract to recruit soldiers for the Army. But it failed to hit its target every year from 2013 to 2019, says spending watchdog the National Audit Office.
