'Our hero in a fur coat': Town bids farewell to the dog that 'deserves a statue'

A team which patrols the streets of Tameside has been inundated with condolences after the dog that became its mascot died at the weekend.

And the outpouring of love has been so strong that there are already calls for a statue to be built in his honour. Sabre had become the face of the Crimewatchers group - drawing much attention from the community during outings and even having a cartoon version of himself used as part of the team's logo. In a post on Facebook today (December 19), the group's founder told followers on social media that his beloved pooch had died peacefully overnight.
