The England shot-stopper has impressed time and time again during his two-year loan spell at Sheffield United. De Gea's form, on the other hand, has gone the other way, with the Spaniard making a number of high-profile blunders this season.
At the very least, it was thought Henderson would return to Old Trafford to provide competition for De Gea and put pressure on him from the bench.
