Downing Street "expects" that students in England should be able to go home for Christmas - despite widespread outbreaks at Britain's universities.

The comments come as fears mounted that students - often in their first years away from home - faced months away from their families.

It came after students were warned to obey coronavirus restrictions or face Christmas stuck on campus over the weekend. But despite the silver lining for students festive freedom, demands for fee refunds for education further disrupted by the coronavirus were rebuffed by No 10.
