New guidance could help doctors treat vaccine-linked blood clots more effectively

Doctors may be able to treat rare blood clots linked to the coronavirus vaccine easier after new guidance was issued by UK scientists.

A team of experts at Oxford University Hospital’s NHS Foundation Trust have identified markers that can help diagnose vaccine-induced immune thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (Vitt).

Thrombocytopenia is a condition where the patient has a low count of cells that help the blood clot, known as platelets. Thrombosis occurs when blood clots block veins or arteries and can lead to life-threatening conditions such as a stroke or heart attack.
