A dramatic video has shown Belgian, Danish, Polish and Swedish fighter jets flanking a pair of Russian Tu-160s heavy bombers above the Baltic Sea.
Denmark and Poland are members of NATO and, while Finland and Sweden are not, they took part in this escort mission. In the video, filmed by Russian pilots, F-16 fighter jets fly so close that Denmark's identifying symbol, or roundel, is plainly visible on the wing.
Despite the cat and mouse game, the supersonic Russian planes stayed on course and were in the air for "eight hours", according to its military.
In a statement, Russia’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) claimed its bomber planes were not “violating the borders of other states” and said the Baltic Sea was "neutral" territory.
