A maternity ward has shared a novel way of educating pregnant women about the dilation of their cervix during labour. Using a variety of chocolate Easter eggs, Royal Devon and Exeter Maternity Services posted a visual guide to dilation on Facebook.
Mums-to-be exclaimed that they would “never look at chocolate in the same way again.” The guide used a different chocolate egg for every centimetre dilated.
Dilation is what happens when the cervix opens in preparation for giving birth. The cervix should be 10cm dilated by the time a mum is ready to push her little one into the world.
The diagram, which is titled the "Eggstraordinary Cervix" was created by Kalma Mamas. The first egg is a Mini Egg which is used to demonstrate 1cm of dilation.
