Meghan Markle's surprise four-word reply to King Charles' kind wedding gesture

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, surprised King Charles with her unusual four-word response to his gracious offer to walk her down the isle, a book has claimed.The former Suits actress was left stranded, with nobody to escort her to her prince and future husband, after her father, Thomas Markle pulled out of the wedding with less than a week to go.

At the time, Meghan's future father-in-law, the now King Charles, offered to step in telling his daughter-in-law he would be honoured to escort her to the altar of the chapel, The Mirror reports.

READ MORE: Piers Morgan slams Meghan Markle as she labels herself 'real-life princess'But according to a book, her reply to this gesture was somewhat unexpected by the then Prince of Wales.Writing in Queen of Our Times, author Robert Hardman said: "The reply, according to one friend, was not quite what he was expecting: 'Can we meet halfway?'"Here was an indicator that this was no blushing bride, but a confident, independent woman determined to make a grand entrance on her own."The podcaster and media personality tied the knot with the Monarch's youngest son Prince Harry in 2014 in a spectacular, star-studded wedding in Windsor.The day was a fairy-tale wedding on all accounts, down to the bride's stunning Givenchy dress, however Markle family controversy marred the lead up to the big day.The bride-to-be's father was slammed by British media after he was busted for staging photos of himself preparing for the big day with British paparazzi.

Not long after, the then 71-year-old who later admitted the photos were a mistake, suffered a heart-attack which sent him to hospital.This lead him to pull out of attending the wedding and walking his daughter down the isle at St George's Chapel.
