Gareth Southgate will hold crunch talks with Marcus Rashford in a bid to save his World Cup dream.England boss Southgate has axed Rashford from his latest squad due to the star's dramatic loss of form.

Rashford, whose last international appearance came in the Euro 2020 Final defeat to Italy eight months ago, has also lost his place in the United team following just five goals in 26 games this season. He clashed with heckling United fans earlier this week following reports he is considering leaving Old Trafford in the summer.

His hopes of making Southgate's final squad for Qatar 2022 now hang in the balance, but Southgate is refusing to give up on the 24-year-old forward. He is planning to meet Rashford in private in Manchester following the upcoming friendlies with Switzerland and Ivory Coast, in an attempt to get inside his head and find out what is going on with the troubled ace.

Southgate, who has also left out Jadon Sancho and Kyle Walker, said: "It's a difficult time for him and he is clearly not at his best."We always want to see our players enjoying their football and playing well - and you have to have a question mark over both of those things at the minute.
