The Spaniard was under pressure from academy graduate Dean Henderson last season and he started just 36 of United's 61 games in all competitions.
Henderson finished the season as the club's Premier League goalkeeper after De Gea had returned to Spain for paternity leave, handing the 24-year-old his opportunity.
But any chance Henderson had of cementing that status ended as he struggled with the aftereffects of picking up Covid early in pre-season.
