The Welsh international agreed to join the League One side on a season-long loan in the summer, but has struggled to establish himself at his new club.Levitt, 20, has not featured in the last 11 league matches for Charlton with two of his five starts coming in cup competitions.
MEN Sport understands United specifically chose to include a re-call option in Levitt's loan move in order to review his situation with the club in the January window.
Levitt had hoped regular football at Charlton would boost his chances of making Ryan Giggs' Wales squad for the European Championship.
