Steven George Gerrard MBE (born 30 May 1980) is an English professional football manager and former player who manages Scottish Premiership club Rangers.
He spent the majority of his playing career as a central midfielder for Liverpool, with most of that time spent as club captain, as well as captaining the England national team. Widely regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of all time,
Gerrard was awarded the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year award in 2005, and the Ballon d'Or Bronze Award. In 2009, Zinedine Zidane and Pelé said that they considered Gerrard to be the best footballer in the world.
Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has moved to dampen rumours that he retired from England duty because of Sven-Goran Eriksson.
The former midfielder was capped 66 times for England, scoring a total of 14 goals. At the age of 29, Scholes retired from the national side seven years after his first appearance.
Though he cited the fact he wanted to elongate his club career, many believed it was because of Eriksson. Or, more specifically, his tactical decision to move him out of position onto the wings to accommodate Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard in the middle.
However, the 45-year-old has squashed that talk and instead insisted it was more down to his own personal reasons. He said: "I know a lot was made of Sven-Goran Eriksson
