Football's financial crisis has not prevented Manchester United offering a £1,200-a-week contract - to a 16-year-old. United are convinced that deal has seen them win a seven-club battle for Sunderland academy striker Joe Hugill.

Tottenham, Arsenal, Everton, Liverpool, Wolves and Leeds also wanted Hugill, but United have agreed an initial £250,000 fee with Sunderland and also personal terms with the player.

Hugill's £62,400-a-year deal will kick in when he is 17 - and becomes a full-time professional - in October. It's not big money for United, but it is for a teenager.

It comes at a time when the Coronavirus pandemic has crippled the country economically, with so many of Britain's workforce losing their jobs or being furloughed.
