Data suggests that children under the age of 15 are more likely to be struck by lightning than die of coronavirus - as the Government scrapped plans to reopen schools before September.

Analysis of data from the University of Cambridge's Office for National Statistics suggests the risk to children from Covid-19 is incredibly low, reports The Daily Telegraph.

While Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter, the chairman of the Winton Centre for Risk and a member of No10's Sage advisory group, believes herd immunity for children may be advisable.

The death rate for five to 14-year-olds in England and Wales is one in 3.5 million and for under-fives is one in 1.17 million, according to ONS figures.
