As awards shows forge ahead amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Writers Guild Awards is opting for a virtual ceremony, replacing its traditional simultaneous bicoastal events.
And the guild has enlisted writer-actor (and former White House staff member) Kal Penn to host. The WGA's virtual presentation is pretaped, and Penn says all of this year's nominees have been instructed to send in an acceptance speech, with the winning team's remarks making the cut. "I feel like those of us who are actors and writers are already so insecure … to have to give the speech and not know," Penn tells THR, laughing.
