Farrow & Ball’s Lamp Room Gray and Down Pipe were style shorthand for a sophisticated, contemporary look. The sustained popularity of grey since the turn of the century can be explained by the fact that it goes with just about any other colour, and after years of magnolia holding sway as the neutral wall shade of choice during the 1980s and ’90s, a cool-toned grey felt like the edgy, modern neutral option. (It also happened to look much better than magnolia under the colder tones of LED and halogen light bulbs as traditional incandescent bulbs were phased out.)But, as is always the case where trends are concerned, you can have too much of a good thing, and any colour that becomes so ubiquitous will, inevitably, begin to fall out of fashion..
