While grappling with coronavirus, India is now having to fight off another catastrophic problem: locusts. Swarms of the crop-devouring insects have invaded more than two dozen districts in western India, with Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat being the worst affected.
The desert locusts began destroying harvests in Pakistan, prompting authorities to declare a nationwide emergency in February, before moving east into Rajasthan.
Photos of state capital Jaipur show the air filled with the fast-moving insects. While locusts cause problems with crops most years, it's rare for them to move further inland than Rajasthan, but wind patterns have been pushing them southwest.
