New lockdown rules will be introduced in England from Monday, and could last for six months. Government experts are planning for the new ban on gatherings larger than six people to be in place for at least three months, the Mirror understands.

And if there is no change in circumstances, such as a vaccine breakthrough, they fear restrictions could be in place for six months.

The move spells a grim winter ahead - and puts Christmas under threat for millions. The new rules mean that people will not be allowed to go shopping in more than groups of six, unless your household bubble is larger than six.

Some of the major supermarkets have implemented their own rules about how many people can shop together at one time. Manchester Evening News
