Human remains found in River Severn which had been in water for ‘significant time’

Police were alerted shortly before 9.15pm on Saturday (May 21) after a member of the public spotted what they believed to be human remains in the water.Officers from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene at Cressage, between Shrewsbury and Much Wenlock.The remains were removed from the water and later confirmed to be human.

It is believed the remains had been in the water for a significant amount of time, as reported by the Shropshire Star. The death is currently being treated as unexplained and police have confirmed that an investigation has been launched.The force said that all lines of enquiry are currently being explored.A statement from West Mercia Police said: "An investigation has been launched after human remains were found in the River Severn in Cressage yesterday evening."Our officers attended with colleagues from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The remains were removed from the water and have been confirmed to be human. "It is thought they have been in the water for a significant amount of time."Detective Chief Inspector John Weaver said: “We are in the very early stages of this investigation and enquiries are ongoing.“Our priority at this stage is to identify the deceased.“The remains are being forensically examined and the results will determine the next steps in our investigation.

This could be a lengthy process but we will update the public in due course.”Police have said that a cordon and police presence will remain around the scene over the coming days while enquiries and searches of the immediate area continue.Councillor Victoria Todd told the Shropshrie Star: "Unfortunately there is no particular shock about it happening.
