A huge moor fire at Rakes Moss is finally out. Firefighters battled the blaze for a week. Crews left the moorland just off the stretch of the A628 Woodhead Pass between Glossop and Crowden today (Thursday).

Since the fire broke out on April 23, crews from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service and Greater Manchester Service worked tirelessly to put it out.

The Peak Park Rangers, landowners United Utilities and the RSPB assisted to help extinguish the fire, prevent its spread and protect the wildlife in the area.

Two helicopters were also drafted in to dump water on the blaze from above. It created large volumes of smoke, with residents many miles away in Manchester reporting they could smell burning last week.
