How Cannes Film Festival became the home of red carpet fashion rebellions

This week should have seen the great, good, and god-they're-wealthy of the film industry descend on the South of France for the 73rd Cannes Film Festival.

Instead, its accolades will be delivered via press release; picture the tumbleweeds blowing across the red carpet, the dust gathering on the once-polished decks of the superyachts usually moored in Cannes for the duration.

Because of all the film festivals, Cannes is the flashiest. The Oscars red carpet might bag more stars, but it's just one night: Cannes is a fortnight of showboating (literally: can I show you my boat?

It's that big one blocking out the sun), of couture dresses, diamond necklaces and parties thrown in ocean-view villas which supermodels fly over just to attend.
