Few couturiers can be more aligned with the British Royal family than Sir Norman Hartnell. From his atelier at 26 Bruton Street, the designer outfitted four generations of royals in full-skirted evening gowns and state visit suits.So it was fitting that Princess Beatrice chose a vintage Hartnell creation, on loan to her from the Queen, for her intimate Windsor wedding to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi on Friday.Yet despite his achievements – Queen Elizabeth’s wedding gown and coronation gown and robes among them – Hartnell is often viewed as a tradition-bound fogey.
